My insurance is up for renewal. I rang around and scoured the internet for a better deal. I could better my renewal notice by £50 but thought, my existing company have been good so for £50 I'll stay where I am.

I rang the company yesterday to renew. A rather nice lady then went through all the details to check they were correct .... but wait, one of my wifes speeding convictions was missing. When she got caught last Feb I rang the insurance company and let them know. They have no record of it. They then told me that the insurance was going up another £120! :o

I whinged a great deal and they finally knocked off £30, which was still £100 more than another company would charge. So in theory I could save about £100 by switching companies.

What is crazy is that if I had the renewal notice from my now new insurance company, my existing company would have beaten it for a new customer. What a way to run a business. They would do nothing for me as an existing customer.

So what have they gained? Nothing. I have switched companies, my wifes car insurance is due in April and no doubt we will move hers as well.

Is it just me or does this sound crazy? Apart from the speeding convictions, (my wife has a heavy right foot), we are no risk. (Never had accidents or claims). If I took my wife off the insurance as a named driver, the quote from the existing company was still worse than the new company with her on it! To date, touch wood, insurance comapnies make a lot of money out of me as I have never claimed on them.

You're probably not in their "specialist market" or something similar.
Or one companies underwriters consider your car / area / odour a theft risk. Or something equally bizzare.

It's all really down to their "formula" at the underwriters, I am sure.

Hey I'm just jealous!

Besides, it's still over £1000 for me to get insured TPFT on a D-Reg 1.0L fiesta, odour or not!

Yeah tis daft. All about getting new customers. My home insurers wrote to me saying that i wouldn`t be getting a new customer discount this year.

So i let the policy lapse ( checked the figures for a new policy beforehand) and then reinsured at the cheaper rate :)

Going uninsured isn`t something i would suggest and i would never do this in motor cover but it saved me 20 quid this year.

If anyone wants more details then drop me a PM :)

Just curious - how have your existing company been good? It's only when they have to deal with a claim i think you really find out if they are good or not.

Mrs Clinka reversed the six month old brat mobile into a wall. We had to take the brat mobile to the "recommended repairer". (Mrs Clinka uses the same insurance company as Clinka). Consequently, the brat mobile came out from the recommended repairer worse than it went in. 10 weeks passed until the brat mobile was repaired to Clinkas standards. After suitable discussions I received compensation from my insurance company.

My complaint was never with the insurance company, only with the repairer. The insurance company throughout were apologetic and I felt did a lot to keep me calm throughout. It was a shame that at the end they couldn't bend their rules slightly to keep a customer.

It also goes to show the importance of shopping around every time. I change mine almost every year except on the Mazda as this comes down each year with AON:p
