Had a right run out in the Scoob this afternoon.
Travelled on a road i know very well,no traffic, car running like a dream,Steph shouting "Don't kill us,Don't kill us" so i knew we were going reasonably quickly.
Passed a bloke in an E220 CDI Mercedes up a hill at a fair old lick and thought i'd just annihilate him.
I was Wrong, very wrong. The bloke stuck to my tail round some mega bends and drove like a demon.
Totally out drove me.
Respect is very much due.
Paul.

In what Ralf?
He didn't have the acceleration on the straights but he had a death wish on the twisties!!!!
Was four wheel drifting and there he was behind me on his phone at one point.LOL

So i take it your car does not have 280 Bhp in it then. :D :p
edit: please don't hurt me.. :(

erm yes Kat it does have 280bhp and i believe there are people on this board who will verify how quick it is.
Maybe i need some more driving lessons from you?
LOL. :D

Oi you! Aren't you supposed to give me some lessons? I need um, to get rid of some bad habbits. Theres no chance in hell i'm gonna let Milly be faster than me. :D

Never underestimate the power of being behind.
(plz...no sex reference intended......maybe)
Following a competant driver means you just have to wrestle your car around corners following his lead. The Mercs have awesome brakes on them. Would take a lot to get away from him.
Big respect to him for doing so well, though :)

I hope everyone understands i'm not being snobbish with this thread and i'm not suggesting by any means that Scoobs are the fastest things on the roads, after all it's really only how a car is driven that counts, smoothness and safety whilst making progress being the operative factors. Those of you who know me will know what i do every day at work and will appreciate that i know a good driver when i see one(however there are lots of aspects of my own driving which i could improve upon).Just wish i could have stopped him and given him a 5ive-o sticker.

Fair enough, and I'm sure Milly could be faster than me...my rollerskate isn't actually all that quick despite it's looks. ;-)

:DI'll have to give credit where credit is due. You're one of the best drivers that I've seen to be honest. I wonder if you're going to race your car against Milly's scooby in a trackday one day once he passes his course. We can all place bets and I can be the bookie. :D

I would pay to see you try!! Can anyone borrow a disability cart thingy for the next Pod day?
Sod it, I'll temporarily borrow the one from our local M&S, (unless milly has a spare one hanging about in his garage)!

Hehe only giving acknowledging a better driver at this current time. Who knows? I might even surpass him one day in Santa Pod when I'm guaranteed not to break my poor car again.
TurboKitty
20-03-2003, 12:11 AM
I'm not convinced that running at Santa Pod is much about driving skill Kat. It's a straight line ffs. I'll grant you that launching and optimising the gear changes are necessary skills but that's about it.

Hence the trackday and airfield suggestion. Drag racing is all about not blowing your car up and taking it to the limits after tuning it. I normally screw up with the calculations as i only use a 5% safety factor or i forget other variables such as pipe integrity. I'm learning though and I can say that I'm a bit ahead from my fellow students in terms of real life engineering stuff as I put it into practice. Wish I can say the same acedemically. :D

Don't knock it TK. I beat the book time in my car.
And I've seen a standard 1.6 Astra making scoobies look very VERY surprised. And it was a hire car, so he literally drove the nuts off it.

sorry to hijack this thread but managed to convince my MD to let me drive his SL55/bmg back from plymouth yesterday, total awesome 568bhp,645ILFT torque, one of the best experiances ever in a car,he is also the proud owner of a 5ive-o.com sticker now.
and respect is always due to other drivers that follow you or you follow at a far old lick but you still feel safe, dont think ive put that very well but you know what i mean

Paul + silver scoob = :o :D
Total respect, Paul, you are a damn good and fast driver. :D
The point about following easier than leading is very valid, I am sure that if you had been behind the MErc you would have been up his **** and overtaken him at some point....without the uneccessary drifting. :D
In what Ralf?
He didn't have the acceleration on the straights but he had a death wish on the twisties!!!!
Was four wheel drifting and there he was behind me on his phone at one point.LOL
in a French Mini Hatch [almost inaudible] 90 hp [/almost inaudible] and the driver of the Merc was about 60
Hides in shame
Let's say both respective drivers were probably two leagues behind you and your experience.

Hmmm, I overtook a lorry on an A road the other day and I noticed a plain looking latest shape Golf, follow me in the manouver. I thought nothing of it and carried on excellerating but when I checked my mirror again he wasn't as far behind as I'd liked. :?
I've no idea what it was, but I guess that more mundane cars are getting quite fast these days and you'll need a whole new power level to make a convincing difference in road performance.
F
Turbo_Steve
21-03-2003, 04:22 PM
General rule is 170bhp/tonne.
If you have more than 190bhp/tonne will make MOST modern cars look very slow. Typically, even the more powerful modern cars are heavier (more safety, interior etc etc) and pack about 160bhp/tonne. This makes them fast......but not fast enough. For example, a 280bhp MY94 WRX is (at a guess from being in one) about 160-170bhp/tonne (at the wheels).
David_Wallis
21-03-2003, 04:27 PM
my scoob will be 500 per ton if my maths are correct :D
Turbo_Steve
21-03-2003, 04:31 PM
Which, I would like to add, is clinically insane.
How much lag are we talking about on a Garett T3? They are not known for their fast spool up properties? I know the Anti-Lag will help a lot, but that is dependant on how aggressively it's mapped.
Just wondering if your off boost in gear acceleration will be:
10mph............10.5..............11........12... ...14....30...80..100
:D If you get my meaning?
David_Wallis
21-03-2003, 04:34 PM
Garett t3 is a baby compared to what I have..
Shouldnt be too bad due to the extra cc's and some creative mapping...
Im aiming for 0 - 100 in about 6 secs.. :|

When i drove Dave's car a couple of months ago it was in it's old spec. But it is still probably the fastest car i have ever driven including lots of exotica(not mine, just borrowed).
The sheer acceleration was mindblowing with no lag.It made roads i know well seem very demanding and total concentration was called for.
All Dave did was sit there looking at dials and grinning.
God only knows what the latest Wallis creation is going to be like but i'm booking my test drive early.
Apparently it will be good for nearly 200mph.
Quick Dave run, here come the men in white coats!!!!!
:D

If (when?) you manage it, Dave, you need to come and show a couple of my friends that is possible. Both are adamant that over 400bhp is impossible in a scooby. (We just won't tell them about the internals, ok? :D)

Just reading through the post's and had to have a little laugh at what Pauleds wrote. I use to have an E220CDI as a company car, lovely little motor. Bit slow on the pick up, as you would expect for a diesel but once up and running it was a dream to drive. There a very stable motor, and very capable of seeing of other cars if you can drive.
Like any car, if you can't drive for toffee it may aswell be a LADA 8)
(Don't laugh at the pic of me next to the E220CDI classic)
