came across an accident today on the a635 to barnsley,

at first it looked as if an occupant had been thrown from the car! the car being a clio which was on it's roof, but after walking around the back of the car there is a bike!

the clio had rolled and had severe damage to the nearside and nearside roof,
there was still 3 young lads in the car, there mates! from another car were also there trying to get them out!

after seeing this, i feel i will be searching for a first aiders course to attend! i have done some training a few years back, but it's long forgotten i wish i knew a little more about first aid, then maybe the biker! and/or the front seat passenger could have been saved!

excellent response time from the emergency services! first ambulance on scene within 5 minutes! then several more + fire service and police, it's astonishing to see the effort that goes into this sort of thing but unfortunatly the elements were against them!

Sad story. Do you know how it happened?

To be honest, you might be better off leaving them in the car. First Aider courses are all very well in teaching the basics of household first aid, but ambulance people know how to and have the manpower to lift people without twisting or jarring their backs / necks which can paralyse. They also have the authority to tell people when and how to lift / move / stay still etc rather than frantically trying to get someone out of the car.

After seeing them in action countless times outside my parents' house, I know it's not something that is taught in First Aid Classes, as I've done a couple of those.

I know that I've been told that I was extremely lucky after my accident in the Zed not to have damaged my back. Given the impact and direction of impact, my passenger then dragged me out of the car by my left arm, which could potentially have paralysed me, if my back had been injured. Fortunately it wasn't and I'm fine and I know he wasn't thinking about that, he was just trying to get me out to safety.

Reminds me of a car crash I was in many many moons ago.

A VW Beetle, and I was in the back seat with two older women ( I was a mere 12 year old then!) Rolled off a bridge into a very muddy river / river bank. I got out but the two women had to be got out since the only exit was the little window in the back. No major injuries but the fear of not being able to get out has stayed with me.

I have not been able to get inot the back of a two door car ever since.
Most probably the only phobia I have, this fear of cars with two doors and the likelyhood of me having to get in the back of the car.........

i knew not to move them, but when does it become the time when you have to! they both died! the biker was 33, and the young lad was 17.

thinking about it now, i think the young lad was dead before i got to him, from what i can gather the lads could have been racing with another car (there mates) but i'm not certain of that.

i kinda thought he would of had more than this, for what had happened and the fact he had pleaded not guilty.

there is always fresh flowers at the scene from both familys,

i think this single incident has affected my manner of driving.

to shed a bit more light on what happened, it looks as if he has been speeding around a left turn which descends a little it is a NSL road and the police we spoke to reckoned he could have been doing around 80,

this combination of speed, cornering, road descent, 3 passengers all contributed in the car oversteering, he overeacted to catch the slide and oversteered the opposite way onto the opposite side of the road, where a biker had the misfortune to be at this moment in time, the biker collided with the front passenger door of the clio head on, the car then rolled everything all came to a rest on the verge, biker, bike and car on roof, this killing the biker and the front seat passenger.

this is the impression i get from what has happened and am not 100% this is accurate
