HI there,
just got back from a holiday in Tenerife to find that the 'Fuji' digital camera I bought there is a total rip off - it's not Fuji, and it doesn't do what it says on the tin. Paid for it with a credit card and have notified them that we wish to dispute the payment (about £135) - does anyone know what kind of a chance we stand of getting Nationwide Visa to stop the payment?

As long as its not gone out yet a very good chance. They should withdraw payment if it has not gone out or try and claim back the money if it has. Either way you should recive your money soon then they do the dirty work for you.

Make sure you DON'T tell them you bought it as a gift for someone. If you bought it and gave it as a gift, even to one of your kids as was in our case, they won't have anything to do with it.

many thanks for that info. it was a kind-of gift - to ourselves, for our 20th wedding anniversary! now I will keep that under my hat. It has just started playing up too, and have lost all my holiday pix!!! Grrr....still, if I don't end up paying for the wretched thing it won't be too bad.

oh dear - just had a letter from the credit card company saying they cannot get involved in disputes about 'over the counter transations'! They claim we should have checked the goods at the time. Even though it says Fuji on the camera. I want to dispute this, but what to do and how to do it? Any more advice?

If you can prove that its not as advertised, you can claim a refund. What credit card company are you using? Capitalone is good for this. Hell even Paypal is would do it..

thanks for the eurocomsumer link - I had already found them last night. I have also discovered that many companies try a blanket refusal first off. But I'm not accepting it - I think their letter to me was rubbish. I am also contacting the Financial Services Ombudsman. They have some great quotes on their website which I think could be used to good effect. It sounds very much as if the thing about stuff bought as presents is also just another convenient fob-off - there is no mention of such a restriction on any site I can find!!! Will let you know how I get on, but i think I could be in for long haul.

Great news folks - the credit card company have agreed to pay up. The lessons seem to be - don't buy a camera in the Canaries, and don't be put off by the first refusal from a credit card company. I still think it is poor practice to mitigate their losses by sending people inaccurate and misleading letters.
