Just wondering if i could get a policy for the wifes jeep, currently in a lockup on the far side of town, then cancel it within 7 days, without it costing me a bomb.

Plan is to get the jeep, drive it to a booked MOT, then drive it from the test center to home, then cancel the policy. (it's not going back on the road until she passes her test anyway, so i've got time to do the MOT work)

Is this ok? Or will i get hit with a "cancellation fee"?

cheers

Russ is probably best placed to answer this one than me but I would have thought that yes you will get hit for a cancellation fee .

It 's worth checking your policy to see if you have a driving other vehilces extension as this would allow you to drive your Mrs' car on a third party only basis (providing you had her permission to use the car).

I'd olways thought (maybe mistakenly) that the owner of the vehicle needed a policy of some kind, before you could drive their vehicle with 3rd party cover? Else you could get a single policy and drive half a dozen other cars belonging to friends, with their permission.

Also i doubt my policy will allow 3rd party usage as it's a commercial for my transit.

Just trying to balance up the costs of insuring/MOTing/cancelling against paying a garage to tow the jeep from the lockup to my flat.

You`d be suprised what covers are on commerical policies these days.

Yes, it is pretty likely that you would get hit by short term rates if that is specifically what you are using the policy for, and of course you would need to disclose that you only want the Policy for a while when taking it out.

How about speaking to your present insurers and add it as a temporary vehicle for 7 days ?

On the subject of short term cancellation rights at the start of the year ( 14/01/05 ) the new regulations mean that there is a 14 day cancellation clause. This is not advertised for obvious reasons but under new ICOB rules you can cancel a personal lines motor policy within 14 days of inception. Most insurers will charge a " time on risk" day by day but they do also have the ability to charge a fee, this changes from insurance company to insurance company though.

Ho hum, license is back, wifey passed her theory test, so now she's keen to get on the road so i rang the insurance company to get things sorted out.

They won't let me add the wife as a 2nd driver
They won't let me move the other car with 3rd party cover (i can't driver anything with 3rd party cover it turn out)
Finally got them to quote a 2nd policy on the suzuki with myself as the main and wifey 2nd driver. £1100

Having a TT99 on your licence officially buggers you! (esp. when you tell them it was for 2 x IN10!)

So i still can't take wifey out to learn to drive, back to the drawing board i think.

They wouldn't let me add the suzuki to the policy either. :(

That doesn`t sound very good at all. Certian trades and maybe ages stop you driving third party only but i`ve not come across it when convictions do. That or it was not there in the first place ( which is very odd these days )

As for not accepting another driver, what did they give as the reason ? ie is it a sports car and they don`t insure anyone without a full licence on it ?

Any why not with the additional car ? any particular reason given ?

Yes i do agree with the IN10, it is viewed rather harshly, whilst it is taring everyone with the same brush, dealing with uninsured motorists is an insurance comanpies biggest headache. It also loses them a lot of money each year not to mention the hassle for people involved in any accidents. :(

They wouldn't add her to the commercial policy due to her age and provisional licence.
They wouldn't add the SJ410 to the policy as they won't insure cars on a commercial policy.

Even when they quoted a new private policy for me on the SJ410, they stated her age, her licence type, my convictions (which they admitted they were a part to!) and no NCB (wouldn't transfer it from the van policy, even though it's the same company insuring me) as the reasons for the astronomical price.

Next plan of attack is see about ditching the commercial policy (which would put paid to computer work carriage), then start up a private policy on the van, which might let me add the wife, or a policy for both vehicles (privately), which would hopefully let me use my NCB to cover both.

fingers crossed.

Just wondering, does the vehicle being moved (the jeep) need to be insured as a main vehicle on a policy for another driver to move it on the "3rd party on other cars not owned by the policy holder" part of their insurance?

Wondering if i can get a friend to take the jeep from the lockup to the MOT, then bring it back to my place afterwards. Would save spending out on a policy until she passes her test (cos no bu99er will touch me for another policy right now!)

No strictly speaking the other driver would be legally covered for driving the jeep back & fore to the garage (and as long as they were in the vehcile as the driver) BUT as soon as they get out the jeep is uninsured so cannot be left parked on a public road legally so it would need to be parked on the garage premisis while waiting to be MOT'd & after the MOT until it was collected otherwise the reg owner of the jeep can be done for no insurance

That's actually a great answer for me as the MOT station i use is on a private road (found that out after one of the mechanics mentioned he only had 2 months to go on a ban and then jumped into a customers car and drove it out of the workshop, i mentioned it and he pointed to the "Private Road" sign directly opposite the garage)

I might actually be able to get this thing shifted without it costing me a fortune! :D
