Yet another query in my quest to get behind the wheel of the wifes jeep :D
Is it possible (legal?) to have two totally separate insurance policies on the same vehicle? The quote we've had for both of us to drive her jeep are astronomical, and it works out fractionally cheaper for us if we buy separate policies.
So, possible? Or frowned upon?
cheers

It is not two policies for the same vehicle really is it. Its a policy each that allows you to drive that vehicle as well as others. You would only claim on your own policy not both if you had a claim. And why not if I wanted to drive your vehicle regularly I too could get a policy just to drive your car. So many policies for one car no problem...who is the winner ..the insurance company it gets more dosh, if more people buy policies for the same car. But I get your message, its cheaper for you both to have independant policies for each other. Just dont be tempted to claim more than once.
I cant immediatly think of any reason why not, but it is VERY unusual. To be insured both parties have to have a financial or insurable interest in the vehicle so you would probably need a document saying the car is jointly owne d with each person owning an equal share.
You would need to make both insurers awaare there is another policy covering the car & explain the circumstances to them
If anything happened to the car you would only be able to make 1 claim for the damage (not 2).
To be honest I wouldnt have thought the savings you would make would be worth all the hassle

Not much danger of a claim, the excess is loaded higher than the value of the vehicle!

tbh I would try ringing around a bit more. Certainly the last few times I've renewed my policy the price was discounted if I included my wife on the policy, even though she has only got a provisional license.
I did query this and their response was that on long journeys when the odds of accidents caused by falling asleep were more likely it was always better to have two people who were insured to drive.
Sounded odd to me but more than one company gave the same reasoning and as they were going to knock almost 15% off the price I wasn't about to argue :D
Cheers
I have two policies on my motorcycle. One for Social, Domestic & Pleasure, and the other for purely Business purposes.

I have to say this thread has opened my eyes a little. I honestly thought and have done for many years that you weren't allowed to have more than one policy for the same vehicle.... As pointed out by Kris, each insurance company would have a vested interest, and what's to stop you making a claim on both (I suppose the insurance companies have facilities in place to stop this from happening)...
Well strike me down !

Well to prove how totally organised i am, i sorted her a quote online, accepted it, processed the initial payment, they even let me print off my Certificate Of Insurance to we could tax the jeep and shift the bleedin thing!
Hooray!
Wrong. Some dozy tit forget to set the date to the ACTUAL date we wanted it to start instead of the 1st of next month (which i use so that the quotes won't expire in the next day or so). And the insurance company want £30 to cancel her policy, have to send back the certificate i printed off, then restart a new policy.
So we still can't move the jeep! ARGH! another couple of weeks rent on the lockup. I'll learn one day.

I think thats still the case. For example if the car was stolen, whose policy would cover it, not both obviously because thats basically fraud. And also even third party would conflict because of the car being liable just being parked on the street.

Double Jeopardy more like
Well we would find out ....:D and what would happen is that each company would pay for half of the claim so you would only get the value of the car once......oh and both companies would reduce your NCB !!!
