Hey all,
Im thinking of flushing my tailgate on the back of my golf, and have had the idea of putting the number plate inside the car behind the screen but level and visible with brackets and appropriate lighting for it.
Whats the ruling on number plates? Would this be legal to do?
Thanks for any input. :)

outlaw - ive got a mk2 and have a rare splitter on the bottom of the bumper that obscures the 'standard' low down position the plate is normally recessed into. Putting it behind the screen would mean the back remains lovely and smooth as i want, not spoiling the bodywork as such.......

I should think that as long as the rear plate is perfectly visible, and not ubscured by the glass reflections (as not all rear windscreens are perfectly vertical) then you could be ok. Also, your illumination should light up the plate, but the bulbs themselves should not be visible)
Tricky one for you to get right - but could be quite effective in the same. I'll leave the ins-and-outs of law to someone with law books to their fingertips.
It may help if you could attach a photgraph of your car, so we can picture what you're asking.

nice dose seem a sham to spoil it with a indexplate dont it
iv got a mark 2 astra gte thats getting the treatment.
but got same prob back and front and tail being smoothed and the frount beam that holds the nober plate has been removed and grilled. and got deep spliter
so was think of puting frount one on spliter so as not to mess frount up
with a solonoid operation tofilipit up and under car for bumps
as the plait realy mess the frount look up.
Serous question to FEDs wouldd that be legal ie the fliping if its just for getting over the humps
ar soon be time for the top coat and clear as soon as it warms up a bit
I can finsh blowing the top and the clear
can fir the NOs while im wating

This might help:

Seems to say as long as it is fixed veritcally on the rear of the car, then you are okay.
The other thing you probably might want to check is that the plate can still be photographed effectively where you are putting it.
